American Energy Renaissance

A decade ago, the United States embarked on what many later came to describe as the “American Energy Renaissance” or “Shale Revolution”. Driven by rapid developments in oil production and recovery practices, the growth of the domestic energy industry was lauded as one of the most exciting stories of the United States’ recovery in wake of the global financial crisis. However, this newfound success has recently shed light on unintended consequences. The resulting supply glut has caused oil prices to plummet and energy companies to revise their growth estimates. While some say the US energy industry has fallen victim to its own success, the rapid advance of technology may be affording it plenty of room to run, even in this environment. Whether the recent volatility in energy markets is to be seen as a problem or an opportunity is, ultimately, up to the investor.
